14 12 2011 VPRO's "NEDERLAND VAN BOVEN"

The work of TerraSphere on the use of UAV's (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) for SMART farming practices is featured on Dutch television. We are investigating the possibilities to capture infra-red imagery independant from cloud coverage, as a basis for variable rate application of potato haulm killing agents and herbicides used by farmers. The project is funded by ESA-ESTEC. The documentary is broadcast on the 20th of December 2011 by the VPRO (Nederland 1, 22:20).

14 11 2011 ERUPTION NYIAMULAGIRA DETECTED BY EVOSS

After a two-year quiescence, resumption of eruptive activity at the 3050m high Nyiamulagira volcano (Virunga, Congo) was first detected, measured and is followed since 18:45 UTC of November 6, 2011, by EVOSS. The volcano dynamics is automatically analyzed by EVOSS – acting in support to the Goma Volcano Observatory – with real-time thermal mass-rate observations, associated to near-realtime gas concentration and mass-rate estimates. EVOSS exploits spaceborne, orbiting radiometers SEVIRI (onboard Eumetsat’s MSG-1 and -2), MODIS (onboard NASA’s Terra and Aqua), SCHIAMACHY (onboard ESA’s Emvisat), and GOME-2 and IASI (onboard Eumetsat’s METOP-A). Within the EVOSS project, TerraSphere is responsible for the production of the Virtual Volcano Observatory, providing online access to satellite based measurements and maps for local volcanic observatories and authorities.

27 08 2011 SUCCESSFUL UAV DEMONSTRATIONS IN 2011

TerraSphere successfully tested and demonstrated the use of UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) to capture multi-spectral images of agricultural fields at various locations throughout the Netherlands during the growing season of 2011. The images are being used to calculate optimal variable rate dosage of potato haulm killing agents and herbicides. Within the BIOSCOPE project, we study the feasibility for a commercial service in agricultural and nature management, together with partners from Belgium and Luxemburg. Our work even attracted the attention of the VPRO (Dutch broadcasting organisation) and footage of the UAV demonstrations will feature in a documentary to be aired on the 27th of December 2011 on Dutch television.

30 03 2011 DEFORESTATION MONITORING USING SATELLITES

TerraSphere have started to work on the REDD FLAME project. The REDD Fast Logging Assessment & Monitoring Environment (REDD-FLAME) project will design, prototype and demonstrate a system capable of monitoring tropical and sub-tropical forests using high-resolution radar (and optical) imagery acquired by Earth Observation satellites. By focusing on early detection of logging activities, the system will provide the means to quickly identify the first signs of deforestation and thus act as a tool to control resource use and sustainable development within these fragile and valuable environments.
